Spotlight on Alberta :: The Alberta Craft Council

Updated: Nov 5, 2021

The Alberta Craft Council is an amazing resource. It develops, promotes and advocates for fine craft in Alberta. Established in 1980, it promotes craft in Alberta through exhibitions, publications, marketing ventures, education, awareness projects and information services to its membership and to the general public. The Council sees its function as twofold; to support contemporary craft while at the same time acknowledging these art forms as integral to the province’s heritage.

During 2017, the council will support and produce 21 exhibitions in 5 locations, market the work of approximately 150 members, provide advisory committee and other member services, coordinate extensive communications activity, and promote contemporary craft arts widely. The council also promotes several important awards for craft including: the Honour Award, the Excellence Award, the Early Achievement Award and the Linda Stanier and Family Memorial Award, A biennial endowed award that celebrates the life of Linda Stanier and honours excellence in ceramics.

The council’s magazine, Alberta Craft Magazine, is the only provincial magazine in Canada devoted to the craft sector. Published three times a year, it is distributed to all members, libraries, arts organizations and institutions, schools and MLA’s. It features articles about fundraisers, exhibitions, artists and general shop talk. Past editions are available to read online.

The council operates the largest public gallery in Alberta. This gallery is completely dedicated to craft.  It also runs a commercial gallery, marketing the work of both established and emerging craft artists. To learn about the artists featured there visit: albertacraft.ab.ca/gallery-shop-artists

The council’s website is a fantastic source of information for artists with links to resources, galleries in Alberta, information about tax, pricing work, portfolios, effective slide presentation and shipping and packing one’s work. It also is a resource for finding out about shows and calls for submissions.

Membership is open to all those working in the craft sector and to anyone interested in supporting the development of Alberta Craft. To learn more about how this organization can be of service to you visit: albertacraft.ab.ca
