Reading Series (Part 4) :: Mother’s Day Fibre Reads

Happy Mother’s Day to all our felt :: feutre canada members. We hope you had a lovely weekend.


This time we are focusing on how to felting books. We begin with Uniquely Felt by Christine White. This beautiful book is filled with plenty of technical advice and well-laid-out, step-by-step diagrams. If you were cast on an deserted island with the perfect felting studio, you’d want this book to help you with all your creations. With 46 inspiring projects, this book is a must-have for anyone serious about felting.


Christine White is an experienced teacher and enjoys teaching felt-making techniques. Her company is Magpie Designs Felting Studio at www.magpiefelt.com. Christine lives in western Massachusetts, and is the founder of the Northeast Feltmakers Guild.

Our second book, Simply Felt by Margaret Docherty and Jayne Emerson is a book designed for felt makers of all levels and ages. Projects include slippers, scarves, and a gorgeous cloche hat. The instructions are simply laid-out with clear instructions. Plus there’s alternative ideas and plenty of advice for those eager to create their own one-of-a-kind creations.


Authors Margaret Docherty and Jayne Emerson are a very dynamic duo. Margaret Docherty is a well-known fibre artist, who teaches felt making, rug making, and vegetable dyeing. Jayne Emerson is a much admired designer of textiles and designer. She is the cofounder of the UK fashion label Salvage Salvage.


Lizzie Houghton is the author of three books about felting, Felting Fashion: Creative and Inspirational Techniques for Feltmakers, Felting Fashion: Creative and Inspirational Techniques for Felt Makers, and Creative Felting which we will be looking at today. This wonderfully vibrant book was designed not just to instruct but inspire. It features a wealth of photos from nature intended to get the creative juices flowing. It includes fabulous carefully laid out tutorials and information from everything from fabrics to working with three dimensional forms.


Lizzie Houghton trained as a Fashion Designer, has a City and Guilds qualification in Creative embroidery. She has taught throughout the UK and  has given workshops in the US, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. She runs a a Summer School in the South of France


Our last book, Complete Feltmaking by Gillian Harris is filled with whimsical projects, such as a polka-dot bag, a mobile, and a tea cozy. It covers many aspects of felting including beginner techniques used in flat felting, 3D shapes, felting knitted work, needle felting and cobweb felting. If you’re looking for a good present for a new felter this would be deeply appreciated.


Author Gillian Harris lives in Surrey, England with her husband and two daughters. She gives workshops, and designs one-of-a-kind bags. She has  been a textile artist for over 20 years. Before that she was a graphic designer working in TV Check out her amazing store HERE.
