Announcing Ex Animo :: Heartfelt :: From the Heart

Updated: Oct 25, 2021

This year we are celebrating Craft Year 2020. The brainchild of Citizens of Craft, this is a national movement designed to promote contemporary fine craft and events, like exhibitions, workshops, festivals, and studio tours. In order to acknowledge the rich legacy of Canadian felt-making, felt :: feutre canada has created a Canada-wide collaborative felt project entitled Ex Animo. It’s motto: heartfelt :: from the heart. The idea behind this: art built by our community to benefit our community, from the heart.

Ex Animo is a collaborative body of work featuring felt pieces made by you and your peers with colours, shapes and textures that represent your region of our beautiful country. This community project is completely inclusive, and has been created to recognize your unique part of Canada. Whether you’re a novice or a very experienced felt artist, we encourage you to take part in this collaboration. We want to see your creations. If you feel particularly creative, please feel free to submit more than one work of art.

The pieces donated by our members will be sold and the funds used to support our Excellence in Feltmaking Bursary, which will be awarded prior to the next Symposium. Many will remember Anna Mathis, our last recipient.

For this collaboration we need submissions to follow these guidelines:

  1. Your unique piece can include wet and needle felting techniques, embellished with stitching, beading, locks, etc.

  2. Made from any breed of sheep wool or exotic fibres from your stash.

  3. Felt pieces should be square, approximately 20cm x 20cm (8”x8”) and able to fit into a padded envelope or short tube for shipping to Ontario. You will be responsible for the shipping cost, so bear that in mind when you’re creating your piece.

  4. Pieces will be photographed by a member of the Exhibition Committee in Ontario, so we’ll have high quality images for our website.

  5. We would like to encourage you to submit 2 or 3 high quality images of your piece, no smaller than 1.3MB, taken in your environment and featuring your part of Canada.

  6. Artists will be asked to submit a 2 or 3 sentence artist statement.

  7. Stitch your name (First & Last) on the back of each piece submitted.

We are very excited about this project. We hope you will join us in our latest creative adventure.
